Hydro Driven

Blueline Laundry’s female employees are relishing the chance to step into traditionally male-dominated roles such as truck driving, thanks to a Community Grant from Hydro Tasmania.

Blueline CEO Mike Sylvester said the grant had helped to fund five women in the organisation to further their qualifications and obtain their medium rigid truck and forklift licences.

Hydro Tasmania Executive GM People Culture and Engagement, Ruth Groom, said funding applications did not necessarily have to be project or equipment-based, and could instead relate to helping cover administration or running costs.

“These community groups are doing great work, often with very small budgets and a volunteer workforce. A grant can make all the difference in what they can achieve,” Ms Groom said.

“It is so rewarding to hear the stories of what the Hydro Tasmania funding has enabled these groups to accomplish. We’re seeing communities that are more connected and empowered and groups able to expand the services they offer their clients.”

Mr Sylvester said that with the grant, Blueline was building the capability, capacity, and gender diversity within its culturally and linguistically diverse workforce.

“Blueline is always looking for ways to reduce barriers to employment,” Mr Sylvester said.

“We love to see our team stretch themselves and gain transferrable life skills and learning. We are incredibly grateful for the support we received from the community grants program and extremely proud of our women that have stepped up and taken the opportunity.

“Our aim is to have five new successfully qualified women holding medium rigid licences and four new forklift operators over the coming months.”

Jordyn Calvert and Belinda Canham are two Blueline staff members grateful for the opportunities their employer has provided.

“I just thought why not? When the opportunity came up, I jumped at it,” Launceston-based Ms Calvert said.

“Even beyond Blueline, who knows when having a truck licence might come in handy.”

Ms Canham said: “I was pretty nervous to go for my truck licence, but I am loving it and so excited to be part of the delivery team soon.”

“I love seeing customers, so it will be fun.”
